Ternium’s commitment with environment materializes in its Environmental Policy and a series of initiatives to promote sustainable development.

The Environmental Policy is the key document in which the organization states its intentions and principles in relation to its global environmental performance.

Based on the principles of eco-efficiency and sustainable development, the policy integrates all related activities, including the community and future generations.

Environmental Management System

Ternium has an Environmental Management System, in accordance with the provisions of its Environmental Policy, needs and internal objectives.  The management system is a set of procedures and practices used by Ternium to continually improve its environmental performance.  Concepts of eco-efficiency are also applicable for the entire system, and seek alignment with ISO 14001:2004.

 All Ternium’s industrial plants have specific procedures for the proper operation, maintenance and control facilities with potential impact on the environment. The company remains committed to continuously update and improve its management and to optimize the efficiency of energy resources, the re-use of by-products and treatment and proper disposal of waste, air emissions and liquid discharges.

The use of scrap as raw material in the production of steel leads to noteworthy savings of natural resources, both an economic and an environmental benefit. Thus, waste disposal is avoided, and the demand for minerals to the environment also decreases, as steel is used throughout its life cycle.

Clean Industry

Ternium’s industrial facilities in Mexico have revalidated the Clean Industry certificate. The distinction confirms that not only do the company’s procedures and practices meet or exceed current environmental norms, but also that systematic inspection of its facilities with the aim of verifying its observance are allowed.

In Argentina, Ternium has revalidated the certification of its Environmental Management System ISO 14001 in most of its plants, and it is close to achieving it in all of them.

Climate Change & Ternium

Ternium and other steel companies that operate under the program have committed to monitoringCO2 emissions and reductions, working with clients to achieve more efficient applications in terms ofCO2 and recycling, promoting industry best practices around the world, and investing in research and technology development.

Companies such as Ternium participating in this program are committed to measure CO2 emissions at its production plants following a common procedure. Ternium has reported its emissions to the World Steel Association data collection team, thus allowing a benchmark of the sector in both routes of steel production (electric arc and blast furnace) and likewise identifying possible improvements to reduce CO2 emissions.

For its work Ternium was recognized by Worldsteel as a member of Climate Action, an award granted to those companies that have fulfilled their commitment to provide information about CO2 emissions, based on a common methodology designed specifically for this program.

Furthermore, the company is member of different environmental-friendly organizations, such as the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (National Chapters), the Latin American Steel Association (Alacero), among other working groups within several industrial and business associations.

Sustainability and environmental care

Ternium manufactures high quality products that are 100% recyclable and that have minimal environmental impact. Recycling is a fundamental stage of the company’s production procedure, as crucial as to guarantee a healthy long-term relationship with the neighboring communities of its industrial plants.
